February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate Black history, culture, creativity and reflect on stories that have often been overlooked. This month we are sharing events, book lists, and movies and documentaries that highlight Black voices and experiences in Canada and beyond.

Sounds & Pressure: Reggae in a Foreign Land

This documentary examines the rise of reggae music in Canada and its role in shaping cultural identity and community for Caribbean immigrants.

Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story
Thursday, February 26 at 6:00pm | Parkgate Library
An award-winning documentary about Jackie Shane, a trailblazing soul singer and transgender woman whose story challenges norms around gender, race, and fame in mid-century North America.

Stream on Summa and Kanopy
Library cardholders can also explore Black films, documentaries, and series from home using our free streaming services Summa and Kanopy.

On Summa, you can watch a wide range of Black movies and documentaries. This month, Summa is featuring Black Community Mixtapes, an award-winning five-part documentary series following KhaRå Martin, a young filmmaker and actor, as she uncovers and re-examines pivotal Black social movements in Canada over the past 60 years. The series offers a powerful and personal look at Canadian history, community, and activism.
Kanopy also offers a strong collection of Black cinema, including documentaries, independent films, classic titles, and contemporary stories by Black filmmakers from around the world.
