October is Canadian Library Month, and the 2025 theme is “Libraries for Life.” This theme means something different to everyone, but one NVDPL patron had this to say:

To me, Libraries for Life means that no matter your age or life circumstances, there’s something at the library for you.

To my one-year-old daughter, the library is where adventures happen, with colourful picture books, songs, fuzzy puppets, and so many new friends.

To my eight-year-old son, the library is where we can go rain or shine to “shop” for graphic novels (like InvestiGators), LEGO, puzzles, and video games without spending a dime, collect every gym badge during the annual Pokémon scavenger hunt, or take a picture of ourselves next to Darth Vader in StoryLab.

For the teenagers gathering near the YA books, the library is where they can meet up to play D&D, join Queerly Quilled to make lifelong friends, or just have a safe space outside their homes that’s just for them.

For post-secondary students, it’s a warm, dry place with free internet, academic resources, and comfy chairs for those long hours studying.

For me, the library was a lifeline where I could take a newborn to Babytime and be around other parents who understood how big a triumph it was just to be out of house.

For my mother, the library is a social hub in retirement and a place for lifelong learning with events on topics such as finance, writing a will, heart health, and more.

For my grandmother, the library was where she could stay up to date with her favourite authors using accessible services like large print books, talking books, and home delivery.

This Library Month, discover something new that fits your life. Pick up a First Language Storytime Kit, test the air quality in your home, start a podcast in our audio booth, or join a book club. There’s so much your Library has to offer, and we can’t wait to see you!
