Borrowing Basics
Radon is a radioactive gas that can be an air hazard in homes and workplaces. Long term exposure is clearly linked to lung cancer. Radon comes from naturally occurring uranium in soil and rock, and levels can vary by region.
You cannot tell if radon is present without testing because it is odourless, tasteless, and colourless. Testing is especially recommended in basements and rooms with ground level contact because radon can enter through cracks or holes in foundations and collect in those areas.
NVDPL lends Corentium Home radon detectors made by Airthings. The detector is about the size of a cellphone and has a digital display. You may start seeing readings after about 24 hours, but the device needs at least 7 days to provide a more accurate reading. Monitoring for one month gives better data from this device.
Place the detector in the lowest lived in level of your home, in a room where people spend time. Keep it away from windows, doors, air vents, direct sunlight, and water vapour because these can affect readings.

Additional Resources
Before returning the Radon Detection Kit, record your readings and reset the detector to protect your privacy.
Your reading data may be useful for research. You can enter your results into the BC Lung Association’s confidential online survey. Researchers at Simon Fraser University are studying radon levels on the North Shore and Sunshine Coast.
The detector shows radioactivity in the air in becquerels per cubic metre, written as Bq/m3. The Long Term Average is calculated over the full time the device has been in use since it was last reset. The Short Term Average is the average per day, up to a week. Averages matter because radon levels can vary during the day.
If your daily average is above 100 Bq/m3, you may want to consider long term testing.
If your daily average is above 200 Bq/m3, Health Canada recommends reducing your exposure. You can contact hc.radon.bc.yt.sc@canada.ca if your radon levels are above 200 Bq/m3.
If you have questions about your results, contact Simon Fraser University researchers at radon@sfu.ca.
If you are interested in your own kit for long term testing, visit the BC Lung Association’s Radon Aware Program.
Participating partners and resources include Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists, SFU Faculty of Health Sciences, Health Canada: Maintain and Improve Indoor Air Quality, and the Canadian National Radon Proficiency Program.
