NVDPL Kiosk Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NVDPL Kiosk?

The NVDPL Kiosk is a self-service solution designed to extend borrowing services to patrons through convenient access to materials in a new community recreation centre. Operating much like a library vending machine, the kiosk allows you to browse a selection of popular materials onsite, place holds on items for pickup, return materials from NVDPL location, and even register for a temporary library ID.

What can I borrow from the library's kiosk?

We keep a rotating selection of the latest and greatest books, DVDs, Blu-rays, and digital audiobooks for kids called Playaways. Our staff regularly restock the kiosk collection to keep it fresh which means you’ll likely find items in the machine that are in high-demand!


Anything without a “Reserved” sticker can be borrowed conveniently without needing to place a hold. You can also request items from any NVDPL location to be delivered to the kiosk for pickup.


Unfortunately, some items, including most children’s picture books, are too large for machine slots and cannot be reserved for pickup at the kiosk.

Can I return books from any NVDPL library at the kiosk?

Yes! Simply press the Return Items button to begin. It is important to note that the kiosk can only accept one item at a time. Please follow the onscreen instructions carefully and repeat the process for each item you are returning.

I don't have a library card. Can I borrow from the library kiosk?

Yes! You can sign up for a temporary library ID using the self-registration screen on the side of the kiosk. This temporary ID allows you to check out material immediately from the kiosk, or request items from NVDPL’s full collection for pickup at the kiosk.


You’ll be able to check out a few items, but your temporary ID is only valid for limited services and for up to 30 days.


To complete your membership, simply visit any NVDPL location with ID and proof of address to receive your library card and full membership privileges.

You can also register for full membership privileges in advance at any of our regular locations and use the card at the kiosk.

Can I see a list of every item currently in the kiosk?

Unfortunately, no. Items in the Lynn Creek Kiosk are not viewable online. This is to allow us to keep popular items stocked in the kiosk which are separate from our regular collection. If you visit the kiosk, you can press “Show more items” to rotate the shelves to see everything that’s available.   

Why are there so few picture books in the kiosk?

The kiosk's design limits the width and height of items that can be placed in the available slots. Unfortunately, most standard picture books are too large for the slots.

Want more picture books? Use NVDPL’s “Takeout” Service to request items for convenient pickup at any full-size location.

Why can’t I check out my items?

If you owe fees over $5, have items overdue for more than 14 days, or have checked out too many items on your account, you will not be able to borrow from the kiosk. Call Lynn Valley Library during open hours to discuss your options.

Are there staff onsite to help me with using the kiosk?

Unfortunately, no. If you experience any issues, check the onscreen instructions or contact Lynn Valley Library during open hours for assistance.

What if I have trouble using the kiosk?

Can I sign up for library programs at the kiosk?


I have a library card to another library system. Can I use the kiosk?
