This is the 10th anniversary of the Parkgate Community Centre which came to share the site with the library after we had established ourselves on Banff Court. This free event includes activities, food and entertainment for all ages. The library will provide paperback books of all sorts-travel guides, children's titles, fiction and non-fiction - all at bargain prices!

Drop in to the Lynn Valley Main Library’s fireplace area for one-on-one chats with North Vancouver - Seymour MLA Jane Thornthwaite.
Jane was elected MLA for North Vancouver-Seymour in May 2009.
Since 2005, she was a School Trustee for the North Vancouver Board of Education and topped the polls in both the 2005 and 2008 municipal elections. She was elected Chair of the North Vancouver Board of Education in December 2008.
Previously, Jane was a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (B.Sc., B.H.E.) with a 22-year career in health care. Jane's work experience includes positions in hospital dietetics and community health, an instructor for a third year Nutrition course at UBC, a Corporate Nutritionist and a National Sales Representative for an international pharmaceutical firm.
Jane has an extensive volunteer career on the North Shore and has lived in North Vancouver for over 19 years.

What Works and What Doesn’t: How and Where to Look for Career Opportunities
We will look at where jobs are posted, the effectiveness of internet sites, how employers screen the 500+ applications they receive, how to use on-site and on-line career fairs effectively, and how to read a job description to determine if you should apply. Participants will discuss sample job postings, develop a short verbal self-introduction to use when meeting potential employers and will be provided with a list of library and other resources.
Presented by Paulette Johnston, a program manager in co-operative education at SFU and continuing studies instructor at UBC, who has facilitated numerous workshops on career related topics.

Tools for Change: Effective Ways to Update your Application Materials
Your resume and cover letter are more important than ever. We will talk about the most effective formats for the local market, what information to include, and how your application materials can be used to demonstrate your potential. Participants will develop a strong opening cover letter sentence to catch an employer’s attention in a positive way, gain an understanding of how quickly resumes are assessed, and will be provided with resource information for updating their application materials.

How to Prepare for a Job Interview
Employers interview to find out more about your skills and also to assess your potential “fit†within their organization. The preparation you do before an interview will help you anticipate the questions you will be asked, prepare your responses and think about what you will ask the employer to demonstrate your interest in the position. Participants will practice typical interview questions (“What are your strengths and weaknesses?â€) and will be provided with resource information for researching company information.
