Board Members
The 2009 Library Board
AREEF ABRAHAM was appointed to the Board in January 2007. He is the President of Kibo Ventures Inc., serves as a CEO/Mentor and interim executive for several organizations, and is an Associate at the Learning Strategies Group at Simon Fraser University. He is currently working on a Master's degree in his spare time. A resident of the District for 14 years and an avid library user, he believes that libraries play an important and often underestimated role in the well-being of communities. Areef is the current Board Chair, and serves on the Human Resources Committee.
LUCY CAYUELA was appointed to the Board in January 2008. Born in Mexico City, Lucy worked as a lawyer before moving to Canada in 1996. Unable to practice law in Canada, Lucy trained as a Legal Assistant and has worked in that area since 1998. She is now a full-time mother to her two boys: Emilio and Marc. Lucy is interested in the non-profit sector and has taken courses regarding community development and non-profit management. A resident of the District of North Vancouver for the past 4 1/2 years and a resident of the North Shore since she moved to Canada, Lucy looks forward to giving back to her community through service to the Library Board. She serves as a member of the Advocacy Committee.
COLLEEN DRAIN was appointed to the Board in January of 2010. She serves on the Finance and Infrastructure Committees and is the BCLTA liaison. Colleen brings a broad range of profession experience to the Board including over 20 years of experience in health care administration and business consulting. A resident of the District since 2005, Colleen believes the importance of literacy to everyday lives cannot be understated and the Library plays an important role in creating opportunities to learn for all members of the community.
HELIO LOPES DA COSTA Jr. was appointed to the Board in January 2004. He is a librarian by training, having worked in the technical services area of the public school system in Burnaby and North Vancouver. He is presently working as a public servant in the benefit administration area of Veteran Affairs Canada. He is passionate about the role of the library as a partner in every citizen's life. He currently serves on the Human Resources Committee, and is the Board's representative to InterLINK.
BRYAN GALLAGHER was appointed to the Board in September 2008. A facilitator for an Aboriginal Leadership Initiative called Ahp-cii-uk, Bryan works with three Nuu-chah-nulth Nations on community-led social and economic development projects. Bryan recently graduated from Simon Fraser University where he studied business, geography and dialogue and he is a Steering Committee member of the SFU Center for Dialogue. Recently he has developed a love for writing and has published editorials in the Vancouver Sun, BC Business Magazine and the North Shore News. In his spare time Bryan likes to ski, swim cycle and play guitar. Bryan would like to continue to see libraries evolve into interactive, engaging, and exciting spaces for people of all ages. Bryan sits on the Infrastructure and Advocacy Committees.
ROBIN HICKS is the current Council Representative on the Library Board. Elected to Council in 2005 and 2008, Robin Hicks has lived in Lynn Valley since 1978. He is married with three adult children and three grand children all living on the North Shore. Councillor Hicks has a lengthy history of community service including acting as treasurer for Silver Harbour Seniors Centre and Lynn Valley Community Association. With an extensive background in accounting and finance, Hicks has lectured on government finance at Capilano University, the Government Finance Officers Association and the Municipal Administration Training Institute. Councillor Hicks' qualifications include a degree in Physics and a chartered accountancy designation. His business background includes fifteen years in audit and industry, and twenty years in local government. He serves on the Board’s Infrastructure Committee.
FRANCI STRATTON was appointed to the Board in June 2007. With more than fifteen years of involvement with North Vancouver Parent Advisory Councils and local school Parent Advisory Councils along with numerous North Vancouver School District committees, she wishes to bring her knowledge of the School District 's reading goals and strategies to enhance community use of local libraries. In particular, Franci hopes to encourage local youth to take advantage of library resources and facilities, and help to promote reading and literacy initiatives. Franci serves on the Finance and Advocacy Committees.
FRANK SULLIVAN was appointed to the Board in January of 2010. Frank has been a District resident since 1989 and believes that libraries should be a focal point of communities. He is married with two teenaged sons and has been employed by a major investment dealer since 1993. Experienced in the management and financing of public companies, Frank holds degrees in economics and management, and is a Member of Certified Management Accountants of BC.
PAUL TUBB has been a resident of the District since 1981. He is a management consultant with degrees in Aerospace Engineering and Business Administration. He is also a member of the North Shore Waterfront Liaison Committee and the Pemberton Heights Community Association executive. Paul was appointed to the Board in January 2003 following four years on a District advisory committee. He is interested in maintaining and expanding the cultural, educational and economic value provided by our libraries. Paul is a member of the Finance and Infrastructure Committees.
